Is Tofu a Healthy Choice?
Tofu is an excellent source of protein for both vegans and vegetarians, with nearly 10 grams of protein per serving. It’s a complete protein, meaning it contains all 9 essential amino acids, making it a fantastic choice for anyone looking to boost their protein intake. Not only that, but tofu is also rich in iron, calcium, manganese, and phosphorus, making it a nutritious addition to any diet. I personally enjoy tofu one or two times a week, knowing it’s a healthy, versatile option that fits perfectly into my meals.
Ingredients:
- Extra-Firm Tofu: Opt for extra-firm tofu to achieve perfectly crispy cubes that hold their shape. Don’t forget to press out the excess water before cubing for the best texture!
- Extra-Virgin Olive Oil: Just 1 tablespoon of olive oil helps crisp up the tofu, giving it a golden, crunchy exterior.
- Cornstarch or Arrowroot Starch: For that irresistible crunch, use 1 tablespoon of cornstarch, arrowroot starch, or tapioca starch to coat the tofu.
- Seasonings: Enhance the flavor with garlic powder, paprika, onion powder, salt, and pepper. These simple seasonings bring out the best in your crispy tofu!
Directions
- Press the Tofu
Start by removing the tofu from its package. Wrap the block in paper towels or a clean dish towel, then place it on a flat surface. Press the tofu for at least 30 minutes to remove excess moisture. My trick: place the tofu on a plate with 4 layers of folded paper towels on each side, then put a wooden cutting board on top to press it down. If you have a tofu press, even better! - Preheat Your Cooking Method
While the tofu is pressing, preheat your oven to 425°F or your air fryer to 400°F. - Cube the Tofu
Once the tofu is pressed, cut it into bite-sized cubes (about ¾ inches each). A block of tofu should yield approximately 40 cubes. - Coat the Tofu
Add the tofu cubes to a large bowl and gently toss them with olive oil. Then, sprinkle in the arrowroot starch, garlic powder, paprika, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Toss everything together until the tofu is evenly coated. - Bake the Tofu : Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and spread the tofu cubes out evenly, making sure they don’t overlap.
- Bake at 425°F for 15 minutes. After 15 minutes, remove the pan from the oven, flip each tofu cube using tongs, and return to the oven.
- Bake for another 15 minutes or until the tofu is golden brown and crispy.
