Butter Chicken Recipe

Butter Chicken, also known as Murgh Makhani, is one such dish that is liked by people all over the world. It is a rich and creamy dish in which tender chicken is cooked in a spiced tomato-based gravy and is full of flavor. This Butter Chicken recipe originated in Delhi, India, and today it is best enjoyed with naan, roti or basmati rice. People from every corner of the world like it very much and eat it with great relish. We all often like to eat this recipe by going to restaurants but today we will tell you about this recipe which you can easily make at home and enjoy with your family.

Ingredients:

  • 500g boneless chicken (preferably thighs)
  • ½ cup plain yogurt
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tsp red chili powder
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp garam masala
  • 1 tbsp ginger-garlic paste
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 tbsp oil

For the Gravy:

  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 2 cardamom pods
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 large onion (finely chopped)
  • 3 medium tomatoes (pureed)
  • 1 tsp red chili powder
  • ½ tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • 1 tsp garam masala
  • 1 tbsp honey or sugar
  • ½ cup heavy cream
  • 1 tbsp kasuri methi (dried fenugreek leaves)
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh coriander for garnish

Preparation of Butter Chicken

  • Step 1: First of all, mix yogurt (curd/curd), lemon juice, ginger-garlic paste and all the spices in a bowl. After that, add chicken pieces and coat them well. Marinate for at least 1 hour (if you do it overnight, it will taste even better).
  • Step 2: Now, heat 1 tbsp oil in a pan. Add marinated chicken and cook on medium flame till it gets lightly charred. Keep the chicken aside.
  • Step 3: Now, add butter and oil in the same pan and heat it. Add bay leaf, cardamom, and cinnamon stick and sauté for a few seconds. Add chopped onions and fry till it turns golden brown.
  • Add tomato puree and cook till the oil separates. Add red chili powder, turmeric, coriander powder and salt and mix well.
  • Step 4: Remove bay leaf, cardamom and cinnamon stick. Blend the gravy smoothly using a blender or immersion mixer.
  • Step 5: Pour the blended gravy again in the pan and mix the cooked chicken. Add cream, honey and Fenugreek Seeds (kasuri methi)to it and mix well. Simmer on a slow flame for 5 minutes so that the flavors blend well. Garnish with fresh coriander and serve with hot naan or basmati rice!

Finally now it is time to enjoy it because after it is made you will not be able to wait any longer.

Suggestions :

  • You can use chicken thighs to get a more juicy texture.
  • The longer the marination time, the better the flavor.
  • Cook the chicken until lightly charred to get a smoky flavor.
